Zohran Mamdani was elected Mayor of New York City in November 2025 and took office in January 2026. A Democratic Socialist and former state assemblyman from Astoria, Queens, he defeated a crowded Democratic field. He is the first Muslim mayor of New York City and a housing and climate advocate.
